CHAPTER 1
SETTING THE STAGE FOR THE PROCESS OF
LEARNING/TRANSFORMING/HEALING
It is important to accept the fact that we all have blind spots in
our vision and commit to uncovering and changing them. We
have to commit to seeing everything, both positive and negative,
without censoring or distorting. Seeing things as we want them
to be and not as they are is illusionary and hinders
transformation. It is very important to be aware that we are
constantly getting hints or clues about our blind spots and the key
is to be open to receiving and understanding these signals. Be
the fish that is aware of the water that it swims in. If we keep
looking and trying to understand the signals we will get new
insights because even though the information might be the same
– we will have changed and our perceptions will be different. See
the process as one of constant learning and growing rather than
achieving a goal. There will always be more to learn about
ourselves.
There is a big difference between intellectual knowledge of
concepts (the mind) and what I call “getting it” (the body). To
me, getting it is a complete knowing of mind and body. Knowing
in the body is a feeling and a full acceptance of the information.
When I see a client get it their energy looks lighter like a load has
been lifted off of them, they are more present and softer. In their
body they are less rigid and tight. The important part is that
these feelings are FELT by the client. Important to note as well
is that when the mind functions it looks at all the possibilities and
therefore sets up doubt. The body does not function in this way
and is an excellent feedback mechanism because it is simple and
consistent. This feedback mechanism is explained further in
another chapter. I believe that transformation occurs when first
there is intellectual understanding, second when we get it and
third when we manifest the knowing in action or movement. A
metaphor I like is of going down a path to a junction. If we turn
left we end up at the stinky garbage dump. The garbage dump is
any behavior that is unwanted and problematic. If we turn right
we go to a beautiful sunny meadow. We don’t want to go left but
we continue to do so with much frustration. Mind body integration
is a way of transforming those patterns and blocks that keep us
from going to the meadow.
